The Three Envelopes: A Manager's Guide to Solving Company Problems

How a Former Manager’s Advice Saved the Day: A Story of Wisdom, Strategy, and Leadership

In every company, challenges arise, sometimes unexpectedly. However, how a leader handles these challenges can make all the difference. A story from a company, where a departing manager shares valuable advice with his successor, reveals an intriguing and practical approach to solving problems.

The story begins with a manager who is about to leave the company. Before departing, he gives three sealed envelopes to his successor with the following instructions:

"Whenever a serious problem arises and no solution is found, open one envelope at a time."

The First Envelope: Blaming the Past

Months later, the company faces a major crisis. Employees are upset, accusations are being thrown, and nothing seems to be working. Remembering the old manager’s words, the new manager opens the first envelope. Inside, the note reads, “Blame the previous manager for everything that went wrong.” With this approach, the storm quickly settles, as the focus shifts to the previous leadership, and the issue is resolved, at least for the time being.

The Second Envelope: Reorganize and Rebuild

Months pass, and another challenge hits the company hard, this time affecting the profitability and quality of products. The manager, now seasoned by experience, opens the second envelope. The note inside says, “Reorganize the team.” This advice leads to restructuring the company, which boosts morale and restores profitability.

The Third Envelope: A Long-Term Solution

However, the story doesn’t end there. A new, even more serious problem arises a few months later. The manager, knowing there’s one more envelope left, opens the third. The note inside simply says, "Prepare three new envelopes."

The real lesson here is not about finding temporary solutions but about being prepared for the future. The advice left by the former manager highlights that no matter how successful a company may be, the road ahead is always uncertain. Leadership, when faced with challenges, must adapt and constantly look for long-term solutions.

This story serves as a valuable lesson for leaders and managers in every industry. It emphasizes the importance of handling problems strategically, learning from the past, reorganizing when necessary, and always preparing for the future.

In conclusion, the tale of the three envelopes reveals how a manager’s wisdom, when passed on to the next generation of leadership, can guide a company through its toughest times. It’s not just about managing problems as they come—it’s about creating a framework for success that can withstand the challenges of tomorrow.
